We recently have found that biodegradable lubricants have some properties that may have a negative impact on priming systems. Biodegradable lubricants are designed to break down upon entering the environment. Since some components of the environment, such as air and water, are able to enter the priming pump, the lubricant may begin to break down while still in the priming pump. As it breaks down, it loses its lubricating properties and begins to thicken. If the priming pump is not cycled with fresh lubricant on a regular basis, a sticky residue may build up inside the priming pump. Over time, this residue has a negative effect on priming system performance and service life.

Although our priming system Operation and Maintenance Instructions (F1031-, Section 2312) presently state that the priming system should be operated at least once per month, we are revising the instructions to recommend weekly cycling of the priming system when using a biodegradable lubricant.
